Light as Medicine: Why Red Light Therapy is the Ultimate "Safety Signal" for Your Cells
We often talk about what we put into our bodies—the minerals, the whole foods, the filtered water. But have you ever considered the "nutrient" of light?
Living in Eastern Pennsylvania, we know those long, grey winter months all too well. When I first started my healing journey after my Celiac diagnosis, my nervous system was stuck in "emergency mode." I was looking for anything that could tell my body, “It’s okay. You are safe. You can heal.”
Enter Red Light Therapy (RLT). What started as a curious experiment became one of the most wonderful parts of my "Daily Foundations." It’s more than just a glow; it’s a cellular hug.
The Science: What’s Happening Under the Surface?
As an NTP, I love the "why" behind the "what." Red and near-infrared light work through a process called photobiomodulation.
Inside almost every cell in your body are tiny power plants called mitochondria. They take the food we eat and turn it into ATP—the energy currency of life. When we are stressed, sick, or sleep-deprived, these power plants get "clogged," slowing down our healing. Red light wavelengths penetrate deep into our tissues to "knock" the clogs out of the way so your cells can produce energy efficiently again.
When your cells have more energy, they can finally get back to the "repair projects" they’ve been neglecting. Here are three of my favorite ways RLT supports the body:
1. Soothing Achy Muscles & Joints
Whether it’s soreness from a long walk or the chronic stiffness that often follows a health flare, red light is a powerhouse. It increases circulation and lymphatic drainage, helping to "flush" the metabolic waste that makes our muscles feel heavy and tired. By boosting ATP, it gives your muscle fibers the cellular "cash" they need to repair and reduce inflammation faster.
2. Calming and Radiant Skin
Healing from the inside out is the goal, but seeing it on the outside is a beautiful bonus. RLT stimulates collagen and elastin, which strengthens our skin barrier. For those dealing with inflammatory conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or acne, red light helps turn down the "pro-inflammatory" signals, telling the immune system to stop overreacting at the skin level.
3. Supporting Hair Growth & Vitality
Many of us experience hair thinning during times of deep stress or hormonal shifts. Red light works by "waking up" hair follicles, moving them from a resting phase back into an active growth phase. By increasing blood flow to the scalp, it ensures that all those good nutrients you’re eating actually reach the root.
The Personal Side: Why I Love It
Science is great, but how does it feel? For me, red light therapy is my ultimate Nervous System Reset.
In the Simply Nourished Method, we talk about signaling safety. Sitting in front of my red light for 10–20 minutes is my non-negotiable "pause." It feels like the warmth of the Kentucky sun on a summer afternoon. It lowers my cortisol, supports my sleep, and reminds my body that the "to-do" list can wait.
How to Start "Simply"
The 10-Minute Rule: Just 10 minutes a day can make a difference.
Stack Your Habits: I love to do my Deep Belly Breathing while sitting in front of my light.
Bare Skin is Best: The light needs to hit your skin directly to work its magic.
If you feel like you’re doing everything "right" but still feel "stuck" or depleted, your cells might just be craving a little more light. Your body wants to heal; sometimes, it just needs the right signal to start the engine.
To a simply nourished life, JJ
